Entry Level Construction Trades
and Green Technology
This course provides hands-on training in the following areas:
- Framing, Siding, Drywall, Painting, Roofing
- Electrical Safety
- Your Role in the Green Environment
- Weatherization
- Thermal & Moisture Protection
- Introduction to Solar Photovoltaics
While in the shop students will construct a 1⁄2 scale home. The classroom will cover training relative to the construction and carpentry field. The course will also provide the student with job search skills, on site job tours, proper dress and behavior skills and knowledge of basic hand tools.
OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
1. Operate power and hand tools relevant to the carpentry field.
2. Accurately use a measurement tape to 1/16" of an inch.
3. Properly set up ladders, scaffolding and walk ways.
4. Properly set up a safe work area.
5. Do basic mason tasks and know related tools and materials.
6. Identify plot plan details and basic layout procedures.
7. Identify different types of foundations – concrete applications and form construction.
8. Construct and layout floor joists.
9. Construct wood framed walls and ceilings, including rough-in door and window openings.
10. Identify lumber sizes and their proper use.
11. Properly install all types of sheathing.
12. Construct a basic roofline and compute related math problems.
13. Compute rise, run and span.
14. Install and layout roof shingles and related materials.
15. Install pre-hung doors and windows.
16. Operate aluminum break and install coil stock.
17. Layout a basic stair stringer.
18. Install dry wall and finish.
19. Prep walls and apply paint applications.
20. Cut and install wood trim.
21. Identify and install various types of fasteners.
22. Assemble and install gutters, down spouts and related materials.
23. Install door locks and hinges.
24. Use basic math to solve job related tasks.
25. Take information from a basic blueprint.
26. Create a basic drawing.
27. Apply for a building permit.
28. Understand the concept of codes and their proper use.
29. Effectively communicate related job task(s).
Requirements:
• Delaware resident between 17 - 21 years of age
• 2 Forms of ID (Photo ID or Valid Driver's License and Social Security Card)
• Ability to pass reading and math exam
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be a carpenter after this course?
Answer: No, but you will be able to get an entry level construction job and start further training to become a journeyperson.
Is this an apprenticeship?
Answer: No, but you can start a four year program in September through the State of Delaware Apprenticeship Program. Your course work at Delaware Skills Center is aligned with the first year apprenticeship course.
What kind of wages can I expect?
Answer: Average pay starts around $8.00 to $9.00 an hour, but your wages are based on your performance and willingness to learn. You may earn up to $15.00 an hour.
What will I learn?
Answer: You will learn basic levels of carpentry, masonry, roofing, drywall, painting, siding, trim and door and window installation. (See the course outline)
What is the rate for worksite training?
Answer: $7.15 an hour for a 7 hour day, for a maximum of 6 weeks.
Can you help me get a G.E.D.?
Answer: Yes, we will provide a pre-test and follow-up instruction. The amount of time needed for completion will depend on your effort. You will be given ample time for completion. Upon completion we will pay for your first tests.
Can you help me get a drivers license?
Answer: We can help you locate a course.
What tools will I need?
Answer: We will provide basic hand tools to you each week for perfect attendance. A hammer, razor knife, tape measure, square and nail puller can be obtained from this program. The student needs to provide proper work clothes, boots and a tool belt.
